I have worked for the Dockland Settlement since 1984 starting at the bottom and reaching the top well over 15 years ago.
My children were very young when I started work here and I used to take them with me , they enjoyed the excitement of the youth club when over 80 young people would pile into the IOD Settlement three times a week to play snooker, badminton or just to meet up and chat. These same young people are now well into their late 30’s with children of their own and I often see them on passing and all of them agree that the Dockland Settlement played it’s part in giving them opportunities to be whoever they wanted to be and to introduce experiences to them they would not have if it hadn’t been for us.
‘Friends of Dockland Settlement’ is made up of ex members as old at 90 and as young as 5.
Our work is still crucial to improving people’s lives and we will continue to meet the needs of local people.
I believe that The Dockland Settlement was the founder of the ‘Big Society’ and why it continues to flourish after 100 years is due to the support and passion of its members and staff.
